Argentine tango dancing near Insituto Cervantes in Manchester

This was supposed to be a family portrait session but it didn’t quite work out like that. Jan’s friends bought her a gift voucher for a family portrait session and a bespoke framed photograph for her and her two sons as birthday present. The only problem was that her sons live and work a long way from her getting everyone together for a family portrait session proved to be more difficult than she imagined.

Now Jan’s passion is Argentine tango so she decided she wanted a different kind of portrait session. A portrait of her and her dance partner doing what she loves. We talked about how we would do the session and about possible locations. A dance studio would lack atmosphere so the would be no good. It was late November and the weather was really cold. So, where could we go that was protected from the weather yet had the atmosphere we needed for taking the dance photos.

I’d researched the origins of Argentine tango so an urban location, preferably an old building or marketplace would work well. Then I remembered that the arcade by Instituto Cervantes off Deansgate had everything we needed. And when we did this shoot wasn’t locked outside business hours. It would be perfect; private(ish), covered from the rain, the right kind of age and architecture, and with an urban feel to it.

So we met there at 8.30am on a cold November Sunday morning with a small sound system, a couple of flash heads and a load of ideas. I think this is my favourite photo from the session. Imagine this style of portrait on the wall in your home. Interested? Give me a call on 01925 471091 or message through our contact page to talk about a session for you and yours. It could be a family portrait or a portrait of you using your passion or hobby as a theme.
